E = mc2

The West is saying the self-declared independence of Crimea can't be compared to the self-declared independence of Kosovo because a 'genocide' took place against the Kosovo Albanian population there and thus justifies the land grab. They're basically saying a nation (in this case Serbia) should pay for loss of life inflicted during war time by forfeiting land. The highest estimates put the Albanian death toll at 10,000 (we'll ignore the 3,000 Serbs killed to make the equation less complicated) and Kosovo has an area of 10,908 km². This works out to roughly 1.1 km² per every person killed. Using this equation enforced by the West, Albania owes Serbia 66,000 km², Croatia is indebted 1,100,000 km² and Austria-Germany about 2,000,000 km². Combined the area would be about the size of India.
